The Dictionary of Jamaican English is the earliest and principal historical dictionary of Jamaican English and Jamaican Patois.
History
'The decision to compile the Dictionary arose out of the agreement of the two editors in 1955 to pool their collections of material for this purpose.'[1] The editors had individually started lexicographic work during the 1951–1952 academic year.[1] Work was principally undertaken at the Mona, Jamaica, campus of the University of the West Indies, with additional support or funding from the Institute of Jamaica, the Carnegie Corporation, and the University of Wisconsin.[2] The Dictionary was completed by June 1963.[3]
Contents
The Dictionary was designed on historical principles, and thoroughly documented past and current Patois and upper-register English lexicon native to Jamaica.[4] Its layout and format generally followed those of the Oxford English Dictionary, Dictionary of American English, and the Dictionary of Americanisms, with the latter two deemed derivative of the first as regards layout and format.[5]
Legacy
The Dictionary has been described as an 'achievement' whose 'linguistic scholarship is regional in reach and importance.'[4] It or its editors further influenced the compilation of the Dictionary of Caribbean English Usage.[6][note 1]

Specifically important at this period [the 1970s], however, was a visit to the [team compiling the Dictionary of Caribbean English Usage] at Cave Hill in 1977 by Prof. F. G. Cassidy, of the well-known Dictionary of Jamaican English. His assessment, commissioned by the UWI, was favourable, and more particularly his advice practical and valuable. His recommendation that a Senior Assistant be urgently appointed fell through only for lack of funds, and slow progress became an increasingly serious problem.
