Maranan was born on March 24, 1979, in Manila, Philippines. His mother, Aida F. Santos, is an academic, writer, and activist. His father, Ed Maranan, was also an academic, writer, and activist who has passed away.

Youth[edit]

Maranan began his public presence as a television host in "5 and Up" by GMA Network on Philippine television.

Education[edit]

  • Completed elementary and high school with honors from the University of the Philippines.
  • Attended Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific, Canada, on a scholarship, completing the International Baccalaureate Diploma (1998) with a focus on Math, Music, and Physics.
  • Earned an undergraduate degree in Computing Science (Multimedia Specialization) and Contemporary Dance from Simon Fraser University, Canada (2005), along with a Co-operative Education Certificate.
  • Obtained a Master in Interactive Arts and Technology from Simon Fraser University (2012).
  • Completed his PhD as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie PhD fellow at Plymouth University, UK (2017), focusing on wearable technology that enhances body awareness through sensory experiences.

Maranan's career is diverse:

  • Associate Professor and Dean at the Faculty of Information and Communications Studies, University of the Philippines Open University. [1]

  • Former program chair of the Bachelor of Multimedia Studies at UPOU.
