Dieu du Ciel (styled as Dieu du Ciel! - French meaning "Oh my God!" - literal meaning "God from the Sky") is a brewery in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, founded in 1998 by Jean Francois Gravel and Stephane Ostiguy.[1] Though it is a small brewery, it is highly regarded in the Montreal and Canadian brewing scene. Dieu du Ciel's beer lineup regularly leads rankings in Beer Advocate's Top Rated Beers of Canada.[2] Dieu du Ciel has also been ranked by Ratebeer as the best brewery in Canada for 12 consecutive years.[3]
History[edit]
Gravel began brewing beer as a home brewer, studied biology, and met Ostiguy during an internship at the Armand-Frappier institute. Along with a third partner, the trio opened the first Dieu du Ciel brewpub at 29 Laurier Ouest, opening on September 11th, 1998.
The Dieu du Ciel beer gained popularity in 2000-2006, picking up demand that exceeded its annual capacity of 800 hectoliters,[3] and requiring the opening of a second brewery, which was eventually established at 259 Rue de Villemure in Saint-Jerome. Luc Boivin and Isabelle Charbonneau joined the company and it was rebranded as Microbrasserie Dieu du Ciel Inc.
In 2010, Boivin left the company to found Microbrasserie des Beaux Prés.
In 2011, Dieu du Ciel received a grant through the Canada Economic Development's Business and Regional Growth program, to expand its brewing capacity.[4] As of 2011, 15% of Dieu du Ciel's production is exported to Canada's other provinces, the United States, France, and Australia.[4]
In 2018, Dieu du Ciel changed its logo and began offering beers in cans rather than bottles.
As of 2019, Dieu du Ciel's brewing capacity is 13,000 hectolitres, and the company planned to build a 5,000 sq ft Beer Garden and shop.[5]
In 2021 Dieu du Ciel opened a new brewpub at 248 rue Godmer in Saint-Jerome.
For beers made from 1999-2018, Dieu du Ciel commissioned label art from Montreal Designer Yannick Brosseau,[6] and then from 2018 onward commissioned label art from Montreal Illustrator Thaïla Khampo Illustrations.[7]

Dieu du Ciel suggested its patrons drink the stout in large groups.[12]
