Visual proof of the formulas for the sum and difference of two cubes

In mathematics, the difference of two cubes is a cubed number subtracted from another cubed number.

Factorization

Every difference of cubes may be factored according to the identity

a3b3=(ab)(a2+ab+b2)

in elementary algebra.

Proof

Starting with the expression, a2+ab+b2 is multiplied by a and b.

(ab)(a2+ab+b2)=a(a2+ab+b2)+b(a2+ab+b2)

By distributing a and b to a2+ab+b2, we get

a3+a2b+ab2ba2b2ab3

By combining, both middle terms cancel:

a2bba2+ab2b2a=0

leaving a3b3
