Digital Master Test

The Digital Master Test, commonly known as the dMAT^[1], is a standardized academic aptitude test introduced for selected Indian graduates applying for Master’s level study programs in Germany. It is used as an additional element in the APS documentation and verification process for certain groups of applicants from India. The dMAT is administered by g.a.s.t. — Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung e.V. — while APS India^[2] remains responsible for academic document verification.

Overview

The dMAT is designed to assess the academic aptitude of graduate applicants who wish to pursue a Master’s degree in Germany. It evaluates general academic ability as well as subject-related knowledge required for higher studies.

From 2026 onwards, the dMAT is being introduced step by step as part of the APS process for selected Indian applicants. It does not replace APS verification, university admission requirements, language tests, anabin recognition, or the final admission decision of German higher education institutions.

Purpose

The purpose of the dMAT is to provide an additional academic assessment for selected Master’s applicants from India. It helps German institutions and APS India include a standardized test result as part of the applicant’s academic documentation.

The test is not a pass/fail admission exam. German universities decide independently how they use the dMAT result in their admission process.

Applicability in India

The dMAT applies to selected groups of Indian Master’s applicants whose previous degree falls under one of the affected academic fields. The requirement applies to applications connected with the Summer Semester 2027 intake and subsequent intakes.

Affected Fields

The dMAT requirement applies mainly to applicants whose previous degree, branch, major, honours subject, or specialization falls under the following fields:

Engineering
Commerce
Accounting
Finance
Economics
Business
Management

APS India’s affected field list states that the official degree title, branch, major, specialization, transcript, marksheets, and academic documents are used to determine whether the dMAT requirement applies. The list is guidance-based and not exhaustive.

Engineering Fields

Engineering applicants may be affected if their previous degree is officially classified as Engineering. Common examples include Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, and similar branches.

A standalone technology degree is not automatically included unless the official title is clearly classified as an Engineering degree.

Commerce, Finance and Economics Fields

The dMAT may apply to applicants with degrees or specializations in Commerce, Accounting, Accountancy, Finance, Banking, Taxation, Auditing, Financial Markets, Economics, and related economic-science fields.

Examples include B.Com, B.Com Honours, Accounting and Finance, Banking and Insurance, Financial Management, Corporate Finance, Investment Management, Taxation, B.A. Economics, B.Sc. Economics, Applied Economics, Business Economics, and Financial Economics.

Business and Management Fields

The dMAT may also apply to applicants with previous degrees in Business Administration, Business Management, Management Studies, Business Studies, International Business, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Operations Management, Logistics Management, Supply Chain Management, Entrepreneurship, Business Analytics, and related areas.

Common degree examples include BBA, BBM, BMS, BBS, and BBE.

Fields Not Automatically Included

Some fields are not automatically covered by the dMAT requirement unless APS India classifies them under the affected fields. These include:

Computer Applications
B.Sc. Computer Science
B.Sc. Information Technology
B.Sc. Data Science
Artificial Intelligence as a standalone field
Cyber Security as a standalone field
B.Sc. Biotechnology
Microbiology
Life Sciences
Pharmacy
Law
Medical and nursing degrees
Architecture
Arts and humanities, except Economics where listed
Social sciences, except Economics where listed

APS India makes the final classification based on the official academic documents and recognition rules.

Exemptions

The dMAT is not required for all applicants. The following groups are generally not affected:

Applicants applying for Bachelor’s programs in Germany
PhD applicants
Applicants whose previous degree does not fall within the selected fields
Applicants participating in officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university partnership programs
Applicants who completed APS online registration before 29 June 2026
Applicants who shipped complete APS documents before 29 June 2026
Applicants who already completed the APS procedure and received an APS certificate for that procedure

If a new APS application is submitted later, the rules applicable at the time of the new application may apply.

Test Format

The dMAT is conducted digitally at licensed test centres. It includes a general academic aptitude component and subject-related assessment. According to the dMAT website, the test is developed by universities in collaboration with g.a.s.t. and is used with subject modules including the General Academic Module for the APS procedure in India.

Administration

The dMAT is administered by g.a.s.t. APS India is not responsible for dMAT registration, payment, test centre booking, technical information, or certificate provision. APS India continues to handle APS document verification.

dMAT Certificate

Applicants who take the dMAT receive a separate certificate issued by g.a.s.t. The certificate becomes part of the applicant’s APS documentation, and the dMAT result is reflected on the APS certificate for applicants who are required to take the test.

dMAT and APS

The dMAT does not replace APS verification. APS India continues to check the authenticity and formal plausibility of academic documents. The dMAT is only an additional academic test result for selected applicant groups.

dMAT and anabin

The dMAT does not replace anabin recognition or the formal assessment of a university degree. Applicants are advised to check the recognition status of their previous institution and degree before registering for the dMAT or submitting APS documents.

A good dMAT result cannot compensate for a degree or institution that is not formally recognized.

Fees

The current dMAT test fee is €150.00. The fee is charged by g.a.s.t. and is payable during registration.

Role in German University Admission

The dMAT certificate accompanies the APS certificate as part of the application documentation for affected applicants. German higher education institutions decide independently how they assess dMAT results during admission.

A good dMAT score does not guarantee admission, and a low score does not automatically lead to rejection by a university.
