Digital Sustainability
One notion of digital sustainability explains how digital artifacts such as software or data have to be created, shared, improved and stored in order to provide longterm benefit to the entire society.[1][2][3] This definition of digital sustainability is aligned with the definition of sustainability within the Brundtland Report that sustainable development "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Thus the concept of digital sustainability connects digital preservation, digital commons and knowledge commons with the aim for sustainable development therefore extending the term "Commons-based peer production" by Yochai Benkler.
Another notion of digital sustainability focuses on the organizational activities that seek to advance the sustainable development goals through creative deployment of technologies that create, use, transmit, or source electronic data.[4] This notion is similar to the goal of information and communication technologies for environmental sustainability.
Ten basic conditions for digital sustainability
In 2017 an academic article was published in the Springer journal Sustainability Science[1] introducing the concept of digital sustainability and elaborating ten basic conditions that digital artifacts have to follow in order to be digital sustainable:
Digital sustainability in academia
Since 2004 Marcus Dapp teaches the lecture on digital sustainability at ETH Zürich [5]. Also the student organizations TheAlternative at ETH Zürich and SUBDiN at University of Basel use the concept of digital sustainability in their activities[6][7] Since 2014 there exists a Research Center for Digital Sustainability at University of Bern[8]. The research center is lead by Matthias Stürmer and consists of about 20 members. It was founded with a donation by the Swiss open source association CH Open[9] of CHF 80'000.[10] and belongs to the Institute of Computer Science[11]
Digital sustainability in politics
In 2009 the non-partisan Parliamentarien Group for Digital Sustainability (Parldigi)[12] was formed in the Swiss parliament. It consists of about 50 parliamentarians from all parties of the Swiss parliament. They lobby for open source software, open data, open content, net neutrality etc. within the Swiss government. The parliamentarian group is funded by open source providers such as Red Hat and SUSE as well as non-profit organizations such as Wikimedia CH, CH Open and Opendata.ch (Swiss chapter of the Open Knowledge Foundation).
Digital sustainability in the business
In 2019 the insurance company Baloise has included digital sustainability in their sustainability strategy[13]. The published this new part of their corporate social responsibility activities together with the new Baloise Open Source Guidelines[14] that allows programmers of Baloise to initialize new open source projects.
Digital sustainability in the civil society
Since 2017 there is an annual conference on digital sustainability called DINAcon[15] taking place in Bern, Switzerland. Speakers of previous years include Simon Phipps and Wikimedia CEO Katherine Maher.
