Dilano Saldin

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Dilano Saldin was an American physicist, specializing in condensed matter. He worked as a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for 32 years. From 2000-2008 Saldin served as physics department chair at University Wisconsin-Milwaukee.[1]

Early life and education

Saldin completed his Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford in 1975. His dissertation was completed in Some Applications of Theory of Electron Diffraction Contrast.[2] Following his studies, he worked at University of Oxford as a post-doctoral researcher in the Materials and Engineering departments. He left Oxford to work at the Imperial College London in the Physics department[3].

Career

Saldin’s research focused on X-ray diffraction, fluorescence imaging, cell imaging, and nanomaterials. He authored approximately 195 publications at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He used a technique referred to as 'ghost imaging'. Ghost imaging is a process that develops images of objects by combining information from light collected at two detectors. The process has been shown in the X-ray machine. Ghost imaging works with less photons, but still can generate high-quality images of the object. The process has the potential to be useful in the medical field, improving the efficiency of X-rays.[3]

Awards and recognition

Saldin was also a Fellow of the American Physical Society. Holds two United States Patents in atomic imaging[2].

Death

Saldin died due to a long-term illness on March 9, 2020. He is outlived by his children and wife. [1]
