Dimitra Gefou-Madianou is a Greek anthropologist and social scientist. Her widespread work includes issues such as ethnicity, gender, identity construction, anthropology and phychoanalysis. She is a Professor Emerita of Social Anthropology Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences at the Department of Social Anthropology, in Athens.

Some of her most important works include Alcohol, Gender and Culture (1992),[1] Πολιτισμός και Εθνογραφία: Από τον Εθνογραφικό Ρεαλισμό στην Πολιτισμική Κριτική (1999),[2] Ανθρωπολογική Θεωρία και Εθνογραφία: Σύγχρονες Τάσεις (1998).[3]

She has studied social sciences and social anthropology at Pierce College, Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences and Columbia University of New York. She has had a long-term research and academic career, resulting to a large number of works.

Academic route and further action[edit]

Dimitra Gefou-Madianou is a Professor Emerita of Social Anthropology at Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences at the Department of Social Anthropology (2014-) while previously she had been Full Professor (1999-2014). She studied social studies and social anthropology at Pierce College, Panteion University and Columbia University in New York.

Prior the constitution of the present Department of Social Anthropology at Panteion University, she had been Director of the Section of Social Anthropology at the preceding Department of Social Policy and Social Anthropology (1995-2003), where she was also was coordinator of the ERASMUS program (1990-2002). She has a long-lasting contribution as Director of the Laboratory ‘Greek Ethnography’, first in the Department of Social Policy and Social Anthropology (2003-2006) and Social Anthropology after its establishment (2006-2014). She has been Head of the Department of Social Anthropology twice (2003-2005, 2005-2007) and also Director of Graduate Studies (MA, PhD) of the same department (2008-2014). Meanwhile, she is teaching in Graduate Programs at Panteion University, at the ‘University Mental Health Research Institute’ (UMHI-ΕΠΙΨΥ), and National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

A big part of her work and actions has taken place not only at a European but an international level also. She has been principal investigator or local coordinator of European Collaborative Programs sponsored by (selectively): WHO-Euro; Commission of the European Communities (DG-V) and Second Framework Program; International Labour Office (ILO-Geneva); Osservatorio Permanente sui Giovani e l’ Alcohol; Nordic Council for Alcohol and Drug Research (NAD), European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA-Lisbon), Marie Curie Fellowships (academic adviser). She has been elected member of the Executive Committee of the European Association of Social Anthropologists - EASA (1996-98). She has been a Temporary Adviser to the World Health Organization (WHO - Regional Office for Europe) in programs related to the sociocultural aspects of health and alcohol (1993-intermittently). Greek representative to European Commission-Directorate General IV for socio-cultural issues related to alcohol (1987- 2000). Member of the International Advisory Board of the ‘Osservatorio Permanente sui Giovani e l’ Alcool’ (OPGA-Rome) and since 2004 member of its Executive Committee. Founding and elected member of the Board of Trustees of the Association of Balkan Anthropology (ABA) sponsored by Wenner Gren Foundation. Research Fellow and Honorary member of the Department of ‘Human Sciences’ of Brunel University London (Dec. 2007-). Member of the ‘Committee on Medical Ethics and Conduct’ of the ‘University Mental Health Research Institute’ - UMHI-ΕΠΙΨΥ (2013-). She has been member of scientific committees and editorial boards of international and Greek scientific journals (such as Social Anthropology, Ethnologia Balcanica, Journal of Balkan Ethnology, Addictions, Greek Political Science Review, and the Greek Review for Social Research). She has been a fellow of the American Anthropological Association (AAA); scientific collaborator of the State Scholarship Foundation (SSF-IKY)-for the supervision of scholarship awarded PhD students abroad, and for the exams to scholarship candidates; independent reviewer in international & Greek journals and book publishing co. Reviewer of research proposals and programs for State Scholarship Foundation, for the University of Macedonia, for the Research Centre for the Humanities (RCH-KEAE), and for the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI-ΕΛΙΔΕΚ).

Interests and works[edit]

Her research interests primarily focus on the following areas: anthropological theory and ethnography; issues of culture; ethnicity, gender and identity formation; migration and multi-culturalism; anthropology and Greek academia; medical anthropology; sociocultural, historical and gender issues in substance and alcohol use; theory of psychoanalysis, psychiatry and anthropology; memory, temporalities and civil war. She has conducted ethnographic research in a refugee community in Athens greater area, in Messogia Attica, in Thessaly and in South Albania. Recently, her investigative interests are focusing on audit culture and accountability in academia, while she continues her research on memory, trauma and civil war in Messogia and other areas of Attica. Articles she has written upon issues of ethnic groups and identity constitution, anthropological theory and ethnography, anthropology at home and anthropology and psychoanalysis, have been published in Greek and foreign magazines and collectives volumes.
