Infante Dinis of Braganza (born 25 November 1999) is a member of the Portuguese royal family, the third son of Duarte Pio, Duke of Braganza and Isabel, Duchess of Braganza.[1]

Dinis is a claimant to the succession of the defunct throne of Portugal, as third in line in the Miguelist branch of the House of Braganza, after his brother Afonso of Braganza, second in line, and his father Duarte Pio, first in line.

Biography

Dinis de Santa Maria Miguel Gabriel Rafael Francisco João was born on November 25, 1999, in Lisbon, the third son of Dom Duarte Pio and Dona Isabel, the Dukes of Braganza.[2]

Dinis was baptized on February 19, 2000, in the Cathedral of Porto, by Armindo Lopes Coelho, Bishop of Porto. His godparents were Sebastião de Heredia, his uncle, and Ana Cecilia of Bourbon-Sicily. At his baptism were present the then Duke and Duchess of Brabant, the current King and Queen of the Belgians, Philippe and Mathilde.[3]

After the ceremony, Infante Dom Dinis was taken to another Chapel of the Cathedral, where he was consecrated to Our Lady of Vendôme.

Infante Dom Dinis received his 1st Holy Communion on the 1st of December 2007, the eve of the 1st Sunday of Advent and Portugal's Restoration Day. His 2nd Sacrament was celebrated at the Church of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, in Chiado.

Dinis did an internship at the European Commission. Now he is studying Political Science and Sociology in Belgium.[4]

Public role

In an interview with TVI's Dois às Dez programme in 2021, together with his two siblings, Dinis said that his father is his hero.[5]

Dinis accompanied his mother, Isabel de Herédia, at the entrance to the wedding of his sister[6], Maria Francisca, at the Palace and Convent of Mafra, where he took to the pulpit to give the first reading of the ceremony.[7] At the ceremony, which took place on 7 October 2023, Dinis read a sermon from the Book of Proverbs.[8]

Titles

As well as being a claimant to the title of Infante of Portugal, Dinis of Braganza is also a claimant to the title of Duke of Porto. A title normally granted to the second son. In this case, as the second son of Duarte Pio, in turn a claimant to the Portuguese crown from the Miguelist branch, Dinis would be the 4th Duke of Porto, if Portugal was a constitutional monarchy.[9]
