Dr. Dipnarine Maharaj is a physician, author, and medical researcher.[4] He is the founder of the South Florida Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant Institute where he also serves as the medical director.[1] He has been attributed with helping to establish bone marrow and stem cell transplant programs at the University of Miami and other locations in the State of Florida.[1][2] He has been referred to as a leading expert in stem cell technology in the United States.[2]

Biography[edit]

Maharaj was born in Trinidad and raised in Scotland.[1] He is a graduate of the University of Glasgow Medical School in Glasgow, Scotland where he graduated with an MB, ChB as well as his research doctorate.[2] He came to the United States in 1990 as part of a bone marrow transplant team at the University of Miami. He was part of the first autologous bone marrow transplat at the University which took place in 1991.[5]

Maharaj founded the South Florida Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant Institute at the Florida Medical Center in 1995 and in 2001 took the Institute independent.[5] He is also known for running FDA approved Phase I and Phase II clinical trials for treatment of solid tumor cancers using healthy white blood cells from donors. Maharaj has stated he believes the study is the "only one of its kind" in the United States.[6]
