Disney DVD is the brand name under which Buena Vista Home Entertainment releases its Disney-branded motion pictures on DVD.

History[edit]

Disney began working on title releases for DVD in 1997, although they were not released in this format in the United Kingdom until early 1998. Disney's first DVD release in the United States was George of the Jungle, released on December 2, 1997,[1] although some sources have claimed that Mary Poppins was Disney's first DVD release.[2] Disney's final VHS release was Cars on February 19, 2007.[3] In 2004, Disney introduced Disney's FastPlay, which started on August 17, 2004, with the release of Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers.[4] This feature is used on all of Disney's animated films from onward, which was released on March 21, 2006. This feature allows the previews and movie to be played automatically, with bonus features immediately following the film. The narrator on the English version of the bumper is Tom Kane.

[edit]

The Disney DVD logo was animated by Pixar Animation Studios. It made its debut with the Platinum Edition of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, released on October 9, 2001.[5] "On a night-sky background, a spark shoots at the middle of the screen, forming a 'D'. It comes again forming a 'V' this time, next to the 'D' and for the third time forming another 'D'. A curved line is drawn, and 'DiSNEY', in its corporate font, goes on top of 'DVD'. The spark goes across the bottom, forming "Pure Digital Magic" (in the native language of the country in which it was released), and that spark appears to be a CGI Tinker Bell, who smiles at us and takes off, leaving a trail of fairy dust that dissolves a moment later."[6]
