Disorder is the first song on English Goth rock record Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division released in 1979. The song is a composition in A-sharp minor. The song begins with a drum beat typical to new wave music with the drum line:

<score lang="ABC" note-language="english">K: perc Q: 1/4=175 M: 4/4 L: 1/4 |: G, G, d, d, | G, G, d,2 |</score>

This drum line is followed then by Peter Hook's bass-line to begin the full band composition. The song is known for its simplicity and song structure while still being iconic, being covered by Third Eye Blind, Midnight String Quartet, and Billy Cobb.[1]

Disorder's lyrics deal with the topics of loneliness, abandonment, but ultimately being set free from your emotions as a liberation from the feelings of depression, which Joy Division's lead singer Ian Curtis is known to have struggled with until his suicide in 1980.[2][3] Hook, following the end of Joy Division, played the song, oftentimes to honour the late Curtis, in his shows with Peter Hook and the Light.[4]

The song was produced by Martin Hannett during the recording sessions for Unknown Pleasures in 1979 and is speculated to have been written around the same time as the other songs on the record. Within the band's first album, Disorder is among some of the most popular songs on the album among fans, and is regularly praised for its influence on the Goth rock and new wave scene in music, alongside the likes of The Cure and Tears for Fears.[5]
