Distillerie Neisson is a family-owned and operated rhum agricole distillery located on the Habitation Thieubert estate near Le Carbet, Martinique. It is the smallest commercial distillery in the country.

History[edit]

The Neisson distillery was founded in 1931 by brothers Adrien and Jean Neisson, and is one of the last remaining family-owned rhum distilleries in Martinique and Guadeloupe.[1] The company is currently run by Claudine Neisson Vernant, daughter of Jean, and her son Grégory Vernant.[2] The distillery's products are designated AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole.

Production[edit]

Neisson rhums are produced from sugar cane that is harvested and crushed on the same day before fermenting for 36 hours. It is distilled in a copper continuous column still to 75% ABV, then diluted with water to 69% ABV and rested in stainless steel vats for three months.[3] The rhum agricole blanc is further diluted to 50% or 55% ABV then bottled, while aged expressions are transferred to French oak vats or a combination of new French oak barrels and used American oak Bourbon barrels for aging. The company produces approximately 400,000 liters of spirit annually.[4]

In 2017, Neisson received organic farming certification from ECOCERT France for one of its sugar cane farms, making it the first distillery in Martinique to use organic sugar cane.[5] The distillery released its first batch of certified organic rhum agricole in 2018.[6]

Products[edit]

Neisson currently produces the following rhums for export, in addition to a number of rarer limited expressions.

  • Neisson Rhum Agricole Blanc, (50% ABV)
  • Neisson Organic Rhum Agricole (52.5% ABV)
  • Neisson l'Esprit (70% ABV)
  • Neisson Élevé Sous Bois (50% ABV), aged 18 months in French oak casks
  • Neisson Rhum Ambré Agricole Profile 105 (54.2% ABV), aged in new American oak barrels
  • Neisson Vieux, (45% ABV), blend of 3-6 year old rums aged in bourbon and cognac barrels
  • Neisson Rhum Agricole Reserve Speciale (42% ABV), blend of rums aged up to eight years
