The District Award of Merit is a distinguished service award presented by the Boy Scouts of America for noteworthy or outstanding service to young people. It recognizes service within the district-level of a Scouting Council. Recipients are selected through a district nomination process, with the approval of the local Council.[1][2][3]

Recipients may be nominated and selected for their efforts on the district committee and/or for service to the district. The recipient must be a registered adult member of the Boy Scouts of America.

The award is a walnut plaque affixed with a silver ring over a blue background. Within the ring is a rope which has been tied into a loose overhand knot with the logo of the Boy Scouts of America located in the center. Recipients may wear the corresponding square knot insignia, with a silver mylar overhand knot on a medium blue background, on the BSA uniform. There is also a lapel pin authorized for wear with non-uniform clothing.[4]

History

The award was introduced in its current form in 1971.[5] The award was first known as the District Scouter's Award, which was awarded as early as 1956.[6]

As a council-based award, it was possible for a person to receive this award more than once if their tenure as a leader included multiple districts within different councils. There is no record of a recipient receiving the award more than twice.[7]

The current nomination process limits a district to one, plus one additional for every 25 scouting units within the district, per year.[8]
