District Dogs is an American pet care company based in Washington, D.C.[1] The company provides pet care services to over 10,000 clients in the D.C. metro area.[2] District Dogs has three locations currently operating, with its fourth and fifth locations set to open in 2022 and a sixth location slated for 2023.[3][4][5]

History

District Dogs was founded as a dog walking business by company president Jacob Hensley in 2014.[2] Over the next two years, the business expanded its dog walking offerings to cover most of Northwest Washington, D.C.

In November 2016, District Dogs opened its first brick-and-mortar facility on Georgia Avenue NW in the Park View neighborhood, expanding their service offerings to include dog daycare, overnight boarding, grooming, and dog training.[6] The company has subsequently opened locations in the Navy Yard and Shaw neighborhoods.[7]

Three additional locations are currently in various stages of planning and construction: a flagship location on Rhode Island Avenue in Northeast Washington, D.C.; the brand’s first Virginia location in the Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington, VA; and a location in the Metropolitan Park campus of Amazon’s HQ2 development in Arlington’s National Landing neighborhood.[1][3][4][5][7]

Recognition and Awards

District Dogs has been recognized by Washington City Paper as a Reader’s Pick for Best Dog Daycare in 2020 and 2021 as well as the Best Dog Trainer for 2021. The company was chosen as a runner up for Best Dog Walk Service, Best Pet Services, and Best Pet Groomer.[8][9]

District Dogs was singled out by DC news media for its early implementation of curbside dog drop-off procedures in the earliest stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.[10][11] The brand has also received positive coverage for its training offerings and its “Structured Daycare” program aimed at dogs suffering from separation anxiety or other behavioral issues.[12]

Founder and President Jacob Hensley was identified by Washington Business Journal as one of the publication’s “40 Under 40” for 2021.[2]
