Diversity (Black Lives Matter Guiding Principle)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Black Lives Matter website states, "We are committed to acknowledging, respecting and celebrating difference(s) and commonalities."[1]

According to an article written by Out.com, Black Lives Matter is "inclusive by its very nature" in that it "seeks to broaden the definition of what black is in America by bringing those that have often been marginalized by America and by the black community itself to the forefront." [2] There is an emphasis on bringing together a wide variety of groups, both inside and outside the black community, to fight for a common goal. Other guiding principles focus on the needs of the black queer and black transgender communities, and speak of supporting and including those with disabilities, as well as utilizing people of all ages.[1]

Due to the de-centralized nature of the movement, the 38 chapters listed on the official website (as of April 2017) have autonomy to operate as they see fit. On the Black Lives Matter website, it states that "#BlackLivesMatter is a network predicated on Black self-determination, and BLM Chapters reserve the right to limit participation based on this principle." and that "BLM Chapters have varying membership policies, and may or may not be accepting new members at this time. Also note that membership requirements vary by chapter."[3] The Philadelphia Chapter of Black Lives Matter recently declared its meetings to be "Black-only",[4] while encouraging white people to participate in other areas. For their reasoning, members Maya James and C. McKinley cited the actions of racially motivated killers like Dylann Roof, who walked into a black church and proceeded to murder nine of its congregants. They go on to explain, "This is, in part, why we are unapologetically black and believe that black-only spaces - where black people can come together to strategize, organize and heal without threat of violence and co-optation - is an integral part of black liberation."[5]
