Jay Akridge

Jay Taylor Akridge (born 1960) is Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Diversity at Purdue University. Purdue University-West Lafayette has a total student enrollment of more than 49,000, approximately 2,300 faculty members, and a system-wide budget of about $2 billion.[1] Akridge reports directly to Purdue’s President Mitch Daniels and is responsible for all academic programs, student life, faculty-related matters, engagement, and diversity, inclusion and belonging.

Personal Life and Education

Akridge grew up in Fredonia, Kentucky. His grandfather T.R. founded the family business in 1933, serving area farmers and rural residents, and his father Dean carried on management of the business. Jay’s original career goal was to complete his bachelor’s degree in agriculture and business administration at Murray State University and return to the business. Instead, he earned an M.S. and then Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Purdue University and began his career as a faculty member there in 1987. Akridge Farm Supply is now led by his brother Paul. He is married to Michelle Elaine Akridge and they have two adult children and one grandchild.

Teaching and Research

Akridge joined the Purdue Department of Agricultural Economics as an assistant professor in 1987 and was promoted to full professor in 1997. He was named the James and Lois Ackerman Professor of Agricultural Economics in 2004. His research and Extension activities centered on improving decision making in food and agribusiness firms. He taught extensively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and worked with food and agribusiness managers in more than 20 countries. Akridge served as director of the Purdue Center for Food and Agricultural Business from 2000-2007. In 1999, he founded the EMBA in Food and Agribusiness, which became the Purdue Kelley MS-MBA in Food and Agribusiness Management, a distance-delivered graduate degree program for working professionals. The program is conducted in partnership with the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. Akridge served as the program's director until 2009, when he moved full-time into university administration.

University Administration

Akridge served as Interim Vice Provost for Engagement at Purdue in 2007-2008, before being named Interim Dean and then Glenn W. Sample Dean of the Purdue College of Agriculture in 2008-2009. The College is regularly acknowledged as one of the top 10 in the world. As Dean, Akridge led the academic and research units of the college, as well as Purdue Extension, which disseminates research-based information to engage and educate Indiana residents. The college is also home to a large international agriculture program, with research and education activities in more than 60 countries. During his tenure as Dean, the College grew enrollment, improved student success metrics, and expanded research and teaching facilities.[2] [3] [4] [5] [6] Jay was named Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Diversity at Purdue in 2017. [7]

Leadership

Akridge has served in a variety of leadership roles with the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (including Chair of the Policy Board of Directors for the Board on Agriculture Assembly), the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, and regional research committees. He also served as Chair of the Executive Steering Committee for AgriNovus Indiana and on the Board of Directors of Agriculture Future of America. He is a member of the Farm Foundation Round Table where he has held a variety of leadership roles. Akridge served on the Indiana State Department of Agriculture Advisory Board from 2009-2015.
