Dmitri Murray
Dmitri Murray is a journalist[1], writer[2], blogger and radio presenter for a Cape Town based Christian radio station - Radio Cape Pulpit who broadcasts on the AM/MW frequency 729. Dmitri started his career in radio broadcasting in 2014 presenting as breakfast anchor for an internet radio station. When the radio station moved to FM frequency he was moved to the weekend programming. It was in 2016 when Radio Cape Pulpit called him to join them and present the weekend programs there. His contributions at Radio Cape Pulpit are radio producer, news compiler, presenter and fundraiser.
Early Years
Dmitri Murray was born on 7 December 1977 in Retreat, Cape Town South Africa. His father Robert Murray was a wage clerk in the South African Navy originally from Beaufort West. His mother, Eileen Murray (Lee) was a housewife who grew up in Constantia before she and her family was forced out by the apartheid government. Dmitri is the youngest of three brothers, Jerome Murray and Shane Murray. His mother had two children prior to marrying his father, Basil Lee and Alan Lee. Dmitri has a half-sister from his father's side prior to marrying his mother.
School years
Dmitri was born in Retreat and suffered with a severe condition of asthma since birth. The doctors advised his parents to move to Mitchell's Plain with the hope that the sea air would improve Dmitri's asthma. Dmitri outgrew his asthma and attended school at Westville Primary and completed his matric at Rocklands High. Dmitri has a love for poetry and, from his creative writing and interest in hip hop music, he started to write hip hop songs. He began a hip hop group in the early nineties called Doctors of Philosophy with group member Jayson van der Ross (aka Tranquil One) and Anthony Vraagom (aka DJ MVA). Dmitri performed his hip hop songs under the pseudonym Master Peace and later Def Rock. The group grew with two added members, Ricardo Manewyk (aka Psycho) and Fabian (aka Fuzzy Kamikaze). When a local Radio Peresenter, Mark Kleinsmith (Radio Plain) offered an opportunity to get signed with a label, the group collectively decided not to accept the offer. The group felt that by signing a record deal, they would be restricted with what they could rap about and compromise their message by becoming commercialized. The group broke up when they completed high school. The members continued to perform at live events individually.
Early Career
Soon after completing high school, Dmitri worked at a large retail store. His application to the military police in the South African Navy was accepted. At the same time, he got an opportunity to join a reproduction company as a photo-lithographer apprentice. His mother urged him to enter the printing trade instead of joining the Navy. He started his career in printing and three years later became a department manager at the largest Repro and Printing company in the Southern Hemisphere working as a Desktop Publisher. He worked in the printing industry for twenty years before he decided to follow his dream to become a radio presenter.
Religious growth
Dmitri was raised in a religious family and attended the Methodist Church. He was confirmed at the Park Avenue Methodist Church in Westridge, Mitchell's Plain. In his late teens, he was introduced by a colleague to the Christian Family Church in Steenberg led by Pastor Steve Barry. Dmitri's visit to a youth service at the Christian Family Church ended with him giving his life to the Lord and soon followed by his adult baptism. He became a member of the Christian Family Church and designed the church's first printed magazine. Dmitri later had backslided and led a reckless life of drinking and partying until years later when his brother Shane had urged him to return to Christ. Dmitri returned to the church and recommitted his life to Christ at a weekend retreat in Paarl. Dmitri became active in church again and served as a prayer team leader hosting workshops on prayer.
Family Life
Dmitri married Nicolene Murray (Floris) in 2001. He and Nicolene have a son named Clayton. Nicolene has two daughters from a previous marriage, Nikita and Bianca. Just before the couple got married, they moved to Parow in the northern suburbs to start a family. They ran into financial trouble after the printing industry declined and Dmitri was retrenched twice over a short period. He managed to get jobs on and off but did not make ends meet. They decided to go under debt review[3] and two years later discovered that the debt counsellor was a fraud and fled with a quarter million rands of their money. This led to real hardship for Dmitri and his family as the bank sold the house and they had to move into a small room together back in Mitchell's Plain.
Calling
Dmitri heard God's voice calling him to work for the Kingdom. Dmitri wasn't sure if he heard God right because this voice came at the time just before he lost his house and had a permanent job working as a manager for a printing company. One night he was praying at a train station when two men stabbed him in his back for his cellphone. Dmitri was traumatized after the incident and went to see a psychologist who ended up prophesying over his life through a series of scriptures that God led her to highlight just a day before their appointment. Dmitri knew that God had a plan for his life and just served God wherever he could. He volunteered for an internet radio station doing the breakfast show for two years. He also got involved with the marketing of the Mighty Men Conference in the Western Cape. It was in 2016 when he was invited to an interview with Radio Cape Pulpit when his calling came to realization. Dmitri knew that God's plan finally became clear when Dmitri was awarded the appointment as radio presenter at Radio Cape Pulpit. He visits communities on the Cape Flats and all over the Western Cape spreading the Good News and bringing the voices of the people back to the radio to broadcast it. He anchors the Saturday morning show from 9:00 to 12:00 and on Sunday afternoons he plays Cape Town style gospel music from 12:00 to 15:00. He also is involved with fundraising for the ministry of the Radio Station. Dmitri is available for speaking opportunities at churches, conferences and events. Connect with him via email should you wish to connect with him.
