Criticism
| “ | ...Dmitry Dmitriyevich Zhilinsky is by no means a political artist. He is perhaps the most consistent singer of creative labor in Soviet art. Pianists, conductors, violinists, painters, sculptors, writers - not a portrait gallery, but some kind of anthem of the Soviet intelligentsia. And even the gymnasts in his most famous painting of the mid-1960s look as if, just for a moment, for the sake of caring for the beauty of their bodies, they put aside the books and feathers with which they varnished their souls. In Zhilinsky, an angel with a trumpet of glory always hovers over people of art, the heroes themselves look not at you, but straight into eternity, their backs are straight, and their eyes are bottomless. These are not realistic portraits, they are clearly “portraits of the soul.” So beautiful precisely in his ugliness, Zhilinsky’s Svyatoslav Richter appears almost like Caesar, Pushkin’s blue (and they seemed to really be blue) eyes of Pushkin are wide open to the world, like Alyonka’s from the chocolate bar of the same name, and the artist himself in his self-portraits is like Hercules with killed by a beast in his arms, then like the Louvre Malatesta from the portrait of Piero della Francesca. All classical associations to Zhilinsky’s art are not accidental. It is extremely quotable - here are Courbet, Ingres, Russian icon painting, and the early Renaissance. It is not for nothing that most of Zhilinsky’s works are written not in oil, but in tempera - the technique is complex, labor-intensive, but with every stroke it directly refers to the great predecessors | ” |
