Do you do poison?

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

"Do you do poison?" is the popular name for a well-known comedy sketch with somewhat of a cult-following.[1] Aired over several episodes of Bruiser (from 28 February to 15 March 2000),[citation needed] it tells the tales of a uxoricidal middle-aged bespectacled man (Robert Webb) going into a variety of establishments looking for ways to kill his wife, always by first asking "Do you do poison?", or something along those lines. However, when questioned over his intentions, he is very defensive (in a library, whilst asking if you could fashion a book into a wieldable block, he responds to a uneasy librarian "What are you saying? I'm just looking for a fireside read. I just want to curl up with a good book. Have you got any books that make people curl up, permanently, in agony?" The sketch is well known due to its meme status on the internet.

Plot[edit]

The people he encounters (Martin Freeman, Charlotte Hudson, David Mitchell, Matt Holness, and Olivia Colman), are often too disturbed by his incredibly tense, indefatigably inquisitive and fast-paced manner to ask him to leave. These establishments are rarely ones where you can find something capable of causing the death of his wife, a fifty-year-old woman--(a well-known quote by the bespectacled man is "a woman who looked like this!" whilst he holds up a photograph)--varying from patisseries to the Skegness gift shop. The man often hesitates incredibly briefly before suggesting something bizarre that would end up killing his wife. When asking how long the pier is at the gift shop at Skegness, he replies, "Have you got a guide book that says [Skegness Pier] is 121 metres exactly that's so engrossing that you don't look where you're going when you're reading it?". His spree in the search for means for murder is cut abruptly when entering a poison shop in the last episode, saying, "I want to kill my wife! I mean, do you do Lilos?" The poison shopkeeper, who is just as tense as he is, informs him that it is indeed a poison shop, leaving both of them very confused.

Legacy[edit]

Despite being nearly 20 years old, the sketch is part of a series known for bringing actors and comedians who are today A-level performers in British media (such as Olivia Colman, 2018's recipient of the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical) together for the first time.[2] Uploaded by Takaouto and various others on YouTube, it now has over 10 million views. The sketch has been parodied many times on YouTube[3] and other internet sites.
