Doctoral Committee of the Swedish National Union of Students

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The doctoral committee of the Swedish National Union of Students (Swedish: Sveriges Förenade Studentkårers Doktorandkommittén, SFS-DK), is a special committee within the Swedish national union of students which works with research and research education questions. The doctoral committee had historically been a cross-university collaborative platform for active doctoral students within Sweden's of students' unions at higher education institutes, to meet and exchange experiences. The committee has been also responsible for educational advocacy at the national level and other matters that concern doctoral students, through, among others, referrals. Since the merger of Sweden's PhDs into SFS-DK in 2008, SFS-DK has been active in the European doctoral advocacy though Eurodoc.

History[edit]

The doctoral committee had been founded within the Swedish National Union of Students since 1986. In 1997, when the need for more effective collective doctoral voice in Sweden was present, Sweden's PhDs (Swedish: Sveriges Doktorander, SDok) was established 29 April 1997 to deepen the nation-wise collaboration between labour unions and students unions. From 1997 till 2008, the doctoral advocacy in Sweden was run mostly by SFS-DK, SDoK and the doctoral candidate section of (Swedish: SULF:s doktorandförening, SDF). In 2008, SDok merged into SFS-DK, inhering the following statutory tasks:[1]

  • To propose suggestions on the operational plans of the Swedish National Union of Students.
  • To initiate and implement arrangements for political advocacy concerning doctoral students and research questions.
  • To represent Swedish National Union of Students externally in questions concerning doctoral students and research questions.
  • To actively work to articulate the collective voice for doctoral students in Sweden.

From operational year 2008/2009 to 2018/2019, the doctoral committee had been eight to ten members including one chairperson electable nationally by the general assembly of Sweden's national union of Students [2] [3], otherwise before 2008 and after 2019, the doctoral committee is appointed by the board of Swedish National Union of Students.
