"Doing All Right" (sometimes written "Doin' Alright") is a song by the British rock band Smile. Written by Tim Staffell and Brian May. The song was re-recorded by Queen on their 1973 debut album Queen. It was released as B-Side with "Liar" as the single.
It was recorded at Trident Studios in London in 1972 and released in the United States in February 1974 as the B-Side of the single, with "Liar" as the A-Side.
"Doing All Right" is included as the third song in the soundtrack of the 2018 film Bohemian Rhapsody.
Background[edit]
"Doing All Right" was written by Brian May and Tim Staffell. It was originally recorded in June 1969 at Trident Studios by the British rock band Smile. Two more tracks were recorded, "Earth" and "Step on Me".
When Staffell left in 1970 to join another band, Humpy Bong, Smile effectively disbanded. Bulsara persuaded May and Taylor to continue, and at about the same time, changing his surname from Bulsara to Mercury, joined the band as lead vocalist, from which emerged "Queen".
Other versions[edit]
- In April 2018, Tim Staffell was invited to record his part of the song "Doin' Alright" alongside the other Smile members, Brian May and Roger Taylor, for the upcoming soundtrack to the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, which tells the life story of Freddie Mercury. The song was credited to Smile, and titled "Doing All Right ...revisited"[3]. The music score was released in 19 October 2018, and the movie premiere was three days later.
- The song also appears on 1989 live album At the Beeb[4], originally recorded for BBC Radio 1's programme Sound of the 70s in 1973.
