Dokkaebi Mal
Dokkaebi Mal(Korean: 도깨비말) is a Korean language game that is a subculture among Korean teens.
History
Korean linguists date the phenomenon back to the 1950s, which was then called "bimileoneo(비밀언어)" and was popular among teens.[1] The word game was used to hide the content of the conversation from adults and has gained popularity after a member of a girl group used it on TV.[1]
Rules
The word game first starts with a leading consonant(choseong) and medial vowel(Jungseong) of a certain Korean syllable and adds the same medial vowel and a trailing consonant (if it exists in that certain syllable) to the consonant of the person's choice. Dokkaebi mal is mostly used when this chosen consonant is ㅂ. [1]
Examples
The word 한글날(hangulnal, Korean day) in Dokkaebi Mal, choosing the consonant ㅂ, would be 하반그블나발.[1]
Cases of usage
A woman in Busan avoided being sexually harassed by talking with a friend in Dokkaebi Mal[2]
