Dominic "Dom" Santiago is a fictional character in the Gears of War franchise. He is a supporting protagonist in the first three entries of the franchise. He has a close friendship with Marcus Fenix, whom he has saved twice throughout Gears of Wars story line. Marcus named his son J.D in tribute to Dom.[2][3][4]

Dominic was born in Tyrus to parents Eduardo and Eva Santiago during the Pendulum Wars and had a brother called Carlos. Dominic lived in the city of Ephyra with his family.
Gears of War (2006)[edit]
Santiago, like Fenix, is a member of the Coalition of Ordered Governments’ Army. He initially saves Fenix from execution by testifying at Fenix’s trial. Though Fenix is still found guilty, he is issued a forty year prison sentence, as opposed to a death sentence. Santiago later rescues Fenix from the prison, moments before it is destroyed by the Locust Horde.
After Fenix is reinstated into the military, he assists him on a mission to deploy to the resonator, a device which enables the human forces to map, and later destroy the Locust’s stronghold. Santiago helps his comrades by convincing one of his civilian friends into lending him a vehicle, which eventually allows his squad to travel to the depths of the enemy’s stronghold. He also supports Fenix during the game’s final battle against General RAAM.
Reception[edit]
The character received positive reviews from gaming critics[5] and was described in 2016 by The Tech Times as the "heart and soul" of the Gears Of War trilogy.[6] They further went on to say:
"Marcus is the "cog in the machine," the grizzled soldier of few words who saves the day. He's largely emotionless. But Dom is something more, and serves as the entire backbone upon which Gears of War exists. The franchise may have begun as a brotastic, man vs. monster story, but it would be Dom that proved Gears of War could also be something more. That wouldn't become entirely clear until later in the trilogy. In the original Gears of War, Dom is a friendly, logical and loyal friend to Marcus. While fellow Delta squad members Augustus Cole and Damon Baird prove to be bombastic and sarcastic respectively, it is Dom who is the most grounded and relatable of the bunch. It is Dom who makes the decision to use his connections with the Stranded, a group of people deeply disliked and distrusted by his fellow squad members, to ensure the success of Delta Squad's mission. He's practical, capable and with Marcus through all the ups and downs."[6]
