Dominoes

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

“Dominoes” is an track that appears on Syd Barrett's second studio album, Barrett.

Lyrics & Background

Dominoes" features imagery of regret and recollection in the lyrics.[1] The song's "You and I" lyric refers to the tail end of his relationship Barrett had with his girlfriend Lindsay Corner. [2] Barrett would later performed the song for Bob Harris' show in 1971.[3]

Recording

The third take of the song was used, and it was recorded on July 14, 1970, the same day as Barrett recorded “Love Song” and “Wined and Dined”.[4] The guitar solo that's featured in the song was performed by Barrett, and was recorded backwards over the existing tape according to David Gilmour in a 2001 interview with John Edginton. [5] Gilmour stated that Barrett had suggested to "turn the tape over" to record it backwards. “After we tried it for God knows how long, he suggested that we turn the tape over which means that you listen to a series of noises […],  and somehow he could divine what was going on. It's a very difficult thing to do, if you've ever tried listening to a a tape backwards to try and work out what's going on, when it's going on. The tempo, anything is very very difficult.  […] but he did did one take of it with the tape running backwards, and we turned it over and played it back  […] It just immediately it seemed to fit perfectly, and that's the one that's on the record. We never had to do it again.  It just seemed (and still) seems mindboggling that he could not manage to get a guitar part that pleased him, or any of us for an hour or two the right way around. But as soon as you've turned the tape backwards into something that it's very hard for anyone to understand, he just did something perfectly appropriate and brilliant in one go.” [6]
