Don Rathbone (born October 1942) is an English former drummer. He was the original drummer for The Hollies from December 1962 to late 1963, and played on their first two singles before Bobby Elliott succeeded him in August 1963.
The Hollies[edit]
Don was born in Wilmslow, Cheshire, England. He co-founded The Hollies in December 1962 with Allan Clarke, Graham Nash, Vic Steele, and Eric Haydock.Rathbone was a member of the Hollies when they signed and starting releasing singles. The bands song audition, a cover of the Coasters' 1961 single "(Ain't That) Just Like Me", was released as their debut single in May 1963 and hit No. 25 on the UK Singles Chart.
Their second single, another cover of the Coasters, this time 1957's "Searchin'", hit No. 12.
Rathbone only contributed to two singles;[1] "(Ain't That) Just Like Me”, and “Searchin‘”, before he was replaced by Bobby Elliott.
Rathbone left the Hollies in August 1963 when their musical disagreements with him became too strong.[2] Desoite his short tenure with the group, Rathbone was featured as a member of the Hollies in two filmed performances, the first being them performing "Little Lover",[3] and the other being the Hollies having a small cameo in the film "It’s All Over Town"[4], performing "Now’s The Time"[5], which was released in theatres in 1964,[4] a year after Rathbones's departure.
Don was briefly mentioned in the Hollies speech, when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
During his time performing, Don kept a diary that time stamped all of his gigs. His first gig was at The Oasis club in Manchester on September 30 1962, and his last was at the Jungfrau club in Manchester on November 30 1963.[6]
Rathbone's final show with The Hollies was during mid-September 1963 and although his replacement, Bobby Elliott, became their drummer in August 1963, Don’s diary still continues to list shows, suggesting that he briefly still helped out to a degree.[6]
