Don Soderberg
Don Soderberg is an American herpetoculturist, author, and the founder of South Mountain Reptiles. He is best known for his work in the selective breeding of corn snakes (Pantherophis guttatus), specifically for establishing the "Palmetto" and "Tessera" color morphs, as well as the "Pied-Sided" Bloodred line.
Career
Soderberg began his career in herpetology in the late 1970s, working in the herpetarium at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas. He later owned "Exotic Pets," a reptile store in Wichita, before selling the business in 1999 and relocating to Texas to establish South Mountain Reptiles.[1]
Selective breeding
Soderberg is credited with producing the first captive "Palmetto" corn snakes, a leucistic morph characterized by a white body with random colored scales. The line originated from a wild-caught male found in South Carolina in 2008, which Soderberg acquired and bred to verify the trait's genetic inheritance.[2]
He is also recognized for his work with the "Pied-Sided" Bloodred morph. Along with other breeders, Soderberg developed a specific line of Bloodred corn snakes (the "SMR Line") selectively bred to express "high-white" lateral patterns, a trait now known as Pied-Sided.[3]
In 2008, he proved the "Tessera" trait was dominant—a rarity in corn snake genetics at the time—which allows the pattern to be reproduced in the first generation of offspring.[4]
Media and authorship
Soderberg has been featured in industry publications regarding his breeding projects, including the interview "Corn on the Pod" in Reptiles Magazine.[5] He authored the care guide Corn Snakes in Captivity (2006), which covers husbandry, breeding, and genetics.
