Donald Dean Studey
Donald Dean Studey (May 21, 1937 – March 8, 2013) is under investigation in 2022 as a possible multiple murder suspect by law enforcement authorities including the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation after allegations made by his daughter, Lucy Studey, that he had killed victims and dumped their bodies in the Green Hollow area around Thurman, Iowa.[1][2]
His daughter alerted the authorities in 2007, alleging Studey had disposed of bodies in a well on his property. Fremont County authorities attended and investigated a well; however, they found nothing. In 2022, the Fremont County Sheriff revealed that they had mistakenly searched the wrong well on the property.[3] In November 2022, it was reported that cadaver dogs had sniffed out possible human remains at the second, previously uninvestigated well.[4]
Agencies investigating Studey
The sites of possible remains were pinpointed in October 2022, by cadaver dogs trained to detect human remains. This followed accusations from Lucy Studey that her father had abducted and murdered scores of young women as well as at least two men and had buried them at the ranch where he lived, some with the help of his children and many of them in an old well.[5]
The account of Lucy Studey has been disputed by her older sister, Susan Studey, who has denied her sister's claims and said she wants her father's name restored.[6]
Studey died, at the age of 75, in March 2013. According to incident reports from the Fremont County Sheriff's Office that were obtained by the Des Moines Register, he had a history of behavior that was violent and erratic. It included threats to kill the son of one of his wives and an incident in which Studey shot himself in the arm in the presence of deputies during a suicidal incident.[7] Investigations by USA Today revealed Studey had a history of arrests.[8]
As of December 9, 2022, the Iowa Department of Corrections announced that their search for remains turned up nothing of interest. Lucy Studey stated she was willing to take a polygraph test to prove her father's crimes.[9]
