He is a renowned expert specialized on colour-plate books, prints, and maps.[1] He has had a substantial impact in the antique book market affecting Natural History, Americana, Cartography, Voyages & Travels publications. He is also well known as the owner of Donald A. Heald Rare Books, Prints and Maps, established in 1972 in New York City, New York.[2]
Heald has also been appointed by his peers to sit on the Board of Governors as Treasurer, Security Chairperson, and as Chairman[3] of the New York Antiquarian Book Fair.[4]
