Donald M. Lewis (b. 1950) is a Canadian Church Historian. He is the Professor of Church History at Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada..[1]

Education

Dr. Lewis holds a Master of Christian Studies degree from Regent College, Vancouver, and a D. Phil from Oxford University.[2] His doctoral work on Victorian evangelicalism was supervised by Dr. Peter Hinchliff, Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History, and chaplain of Balliol College. His doctoral thesis was: "The Evangelical Mission to the British Working Class: a study of the reasons for the growth of a pan-evangelical approach to urban evangelism, with special reference to London, 1828-1860" (University of Oxford, 1981).

Career

Dr. Lewis is a specialist in the history of evangelicalism in the Victorian era and has written and published extensively in this area. He has written numerous articles and book reviews for both popular and academic periodicals, including Fides Et Historia and The American Historical Review.[3] One of his earliest works was Lighten Their Darkness: the Evangelical Mission to Working-Class London, 1828-1830 (Westport, CT, Greenwood Publishing Group,1985; Reprinted by Paternoster Press, 2011),[4] a substantial revision and expansion of his doctoral thesis. Sheridan Gilley calls it "the most sophisticated monograph which we possess on English evangelicalism."[5]

Probably the most outstanding work of Dr. Lewis is the two-volume The Blackwell Dictionary of Evangelical Biography, 1735-1860 (Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1995).[6][7] He assembled a team of twenty-nine specialist editors and about 350 contributors from all over the world and composed over 3,500 entries, over a period of ten years.[8] Each entry refers to a participant in the evangelical revival of the eighteenth century or the expanding tradition it created in the various Protestant churches of the following century.[8] As Alister McGrath comments: "The world of historical scholarship owes an enormous debt to Professor Lewis ... for masterminding this major resource."[9] Truly the editorial patience and perseverance, the breadth of scholarly expertise, and the ambitious quality which characterize the dictionary make it an outstanding achievement.[10]

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s Dr. Lewis worked closely with several leading historians such as Mark Noll, George Rawlyk, and Brian Stanley in a series of conferences and this resulted in two edited works Christianity Reborn: The Global Expansion of Evangelicalism in the 20th Century (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans 2005)[11] and Global Evangelicalism: Theology, History and Culture in Regional Perspective (Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, 2014)[12]

One of Dr. Lewis' recent works is the publication of the manuscript diary of Joseph Oppenheimer, a London city missionary--In Darkest London: The Manuscript Diary of Joseph Oppenheimer, City Missionary (Vancouver, Regent College Publishing, 2018).[13] Mark Noll writes, "Donald Lewis' compelling book documents a person who, through desperately difficult work, sought not sensationalism but salvation."[14] David Bebbington adds, "Donald Lewis, the scholar who knows more than anybody else about the London City Mission in the nineteenth century, has edited a journal kept by one of its agents, a German-Jewish convert named Joseph Oppenheimer, during 1861-1862. The full transcription records Oppenheimer's ministry among the very poor of the British capital, and eight chapters analyze aspects of his efforts in pioneer evangelism. Here is a source that vividly illuminates the work of Victorian Evangelicals in the growing cities of the age."[15]

In the early 2000s, Dr. Lewis also started working on a book focusing on Lord Shaftesbury, the leading social reformer of Victorian Britain, and the most prominent evangelical Anglican layman of his era. The result was a book on the history of Christian Zionism: The Origins of Christian Zionism: Evangelical Support for a Jewish Homeland (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2014),[16][17] a book detailing the nineteenth-century background to the rise of Christian Zionism (Read Shalom Goldman's review here[18]). As Jeffrey Gros observes, "This volume is an important contribution to the understanding of the complex relationship between the variety of Judaisms and British evangelicals in recent history, as well as the influence of these personalities and ideas on the events of that day. The volume is full of ironies and is an important corrective to the received narratives in a variety of Christian, Jewish, Arab-Muslim and Christian, and secular retellings of the story."[19]

He has followed up the scholarship in this field with his most recent work A Short History of Christian Zionism: From the Reformation to the Twenty-First Century (Downers’ Grove, IL: InterVarsity Academic, 2021).[20] According to Yaakov Ariel, "Donald M. Lewis has done a heroic work in exploring the history of Christian Zionism from its inception in the Reformation era until our times. The book is, to date, the most comprehensive and thorough study of the topic and offers an excellent overview of a highly important religious and political movement."[21] Bruce Waltke comments: "The history of the belief that 'the Jewish people have a biblically mandated claim to their ancient homeland in the Middle East' is complicated, convoluted, and controversial. Nevertheless, in this well-researched (i.e., thorough), well-reasoned (i.e., unbiased), and well-written book (i.e., with clarity) Lewis successfully traces the many threads that make up the tapestry of this evolving, theologically driven, political movement. It should be a must-read."[22]

Professor Lewis is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.[23] He has served as Regent’s Academic Dean, and is currently the Secretary of the College’s Anglican Studies Program.[24][25]
