Doria Loyce Ragland (born September 1956) is the mother of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, from her marriage to Thomas Markle. A longtime resident of California, she has worked as a social worker in the mental health sector.
Early life[edit]
Born in September 1956[1][2] to an African-American family in Cleveland, Ohio, Doria Ragland is the daughter of Jeanette Arnold and her second husband Alvin Ragland.[3] Her mother was a nurse and her father was an antique dealer.[4] Ragland's maternal grandparents, James and Netty Arnold, worked as a bellhop and an elevator operator at the whites-only Hotel St. Regis on Euclid Avenue in Cleveland.[3][5][6][lower-alpha 1] When Ragland was a baby, her parents moved to Los Angeles.[3] She attended Fairfax High School.[4]
Career and education[edit]
After high school, Ragland worked as a make-up artist, where she later met her former husband Thomas Markle while employed at the studio for the television show General Hospital. She later worked as a flight attendant[7] and attained a bachelor of arts in psychology.[4] In 2015, Ragland became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker after having received a Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California.[8][9] Ragland worked as a social worker for a mental health clinic, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, in Culver City, California.[10] Ragland quit her job in May 2018 to enter private practice[11][12] working with elderly patients. Ragland has also worked as a yoga instructor.[2]
Personal life[edit]
Ragland married lighting director[8] Thomas Markle, at the Self-Realization Fellowship Temple in Hollywood (Los Angeles) on December 23, 1979.[13] The Markles had a daughter together in 1981 who was named Rachel Meghan Markle, known as Meghan.[13] Thomas and Doria Markle's marriage ended in divorce in 1987[2] or 1988.[14] The couple remain friends, and both contributed to the raising of their daughter.[4]
Ragland resides in View Park–Windsor Hills, California.[15][16] in a house she inherited from her father in 2011.[4]
Her daughter Meghan became a member of the British royal family when she married the Duke of Sussex on May 19, 2018. Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding ceremony took place at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle[17] at which time Ragland's daughter became the Duchess of Sussex.[18] Ragland attended the royal wedding.[19][20]
Notes[edit]
- ↑ According to information passed down (much of it verbally) from earlier generations the Ragland name came from William Ragland, a Methodist who had emigrated during the eighteenth century from Cornwall, England to North America, settling successively in Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia.[5] It is inferred by family members that Doria Ragland's first identifiable African American Ragland ancestor was Richard Ragland, born in Jonesboro, Georgia in 1830: he lived long enough to experience the (formal) abolition of slavery in 1865.[5]
