Dorsett Barnwell (born December 2, 1987) is an American boxer who won the heavyweight bronze at the Junior World Championships 2006 in Agadir.
Career[edit]
Barnwell took up boxing in 2002 under Dan Campbell who is now USA Boxing National Coaching Director. In 2004 he was shot in the arm at a party but was able to continue boxing. Dorsett Barnwell had a stellar amateur career capturing national titles in the Under -19, PAL, Junior Olympics and Ringside categories. Barnwell has been a sparring partner in the camps of WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin, former cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev and the Klitschko brothers. Barnwell is trained by Daniel Campbell, the former director of coaching for USA Boxing, who presided over the U.S. boxing team at the 2008 Beijing Games. Barnwell made his first appearance under the GH3 Banner on August 3rd in Whitehall, New York.
In 2006 he participated in the Golden Gloves (seniors) but lost his second fight to Erick Vega. He became under-19 national champion in Kansas City, and with 30 amateur fights to his credit he went to the junior (under-19) world championships. He had a first round bye, then beat Uzbekistan's Muralimov Ahvov in the quarterfinal round 28-18 in his first major international bout, but lost his semifinal to highly touted Russian Sergey Kalchugin by RSCO. He was one of three American bronze medallists, the others being Luis Yanez and Michael Hunter.
In the opening bout of the evening, Norfolk heavyweight Dorsett Barnwell scored a knockout victory in his professional debut against Washington, DC’s Kareem Wilson (0-5). A former under 19 national amateur champion, Barnwell knocked Wilson down with two left hooks right on target in round three. Unable to get to his feet, referee Steve Smoger called a halt to he bout 1:30 into the round. As of August 2013, Barnwell is 11–0, with 5 KOs.
