Dot big bang is an online game creation platform by Controlzee.[1] that runs on desktop and mobile devices. It allows users to create and play games in a real-time 3D multiplayer environment in their web browser.

Games are written in the TypeScript programming language, and 3D models and environments are constructed using built-in tools that also run in the browser. The platform hosts video games, experiences, objects, and environments made by users and the development team.

The tools used to create games on the dot big bang are part of the standard game client. The game creation engine is entirely browser-based. The tools consist of a voxel object editor where users can make 3D objects, a world editor where users can assemble objects into levels and games, and a code editor that can be used to add behaviours and logic. Multiple users can edit the same game simultaneously, and games are playable, once published, in a browser window. Cross platform play allows players and creators on different types of device to play in the same session.

Development[edit]

Dot big bang was created by Robert Anderberg, Jon Stockwell, Jacques Menuet and Porter Schutz in 2016. In 2020, the platform launched a redesigned Game Editor, and a Hub World welcome area that has since been played 2.9 million times. An online multiplayer game called Straits of Danger was released in collaboration with streamer day9, as reported by Venturebeat[2]. In 2021, several games were created in collaboration with gaming YouTuber Preston Arsement [3]

Reception[edit]

Dot big bang has been reported in the mainstream and independent games media.

In 2022, God Is A Geek reviewed dot big bang, awarding it 4/5 and calling it "a powerful creation tool"[4]. Game Developer (website) ran an extensive piece on dot big bang[5]. The platform was featured on the cover of print magazine 3D World issue 236[6], in an article entitled "Dot big bang: Democratising Game Development". UK games industry magazine MCV/Develop published a piece entitled "Dot big bang: An explosion of online creativity"[7]. Collaborations with gaming YouTuber PrestonPlayz have been reported by esports website Dexerto[3], Games Enquirer[8], and Bleeding Cool[9]. Massively Overpowered described the platform's sandbox nature[10]. Alpha Beta Gamer[11] added that it is a "new open browser-based platform that will allow players to build play and share their own voxel-based games".

In 2023, dot big bang was featured in the Game Developers Conference "The Future Of Play" keynote event[12], which was reported on by Pocket Tactics[13][14] and The Verge[15]. The farming game Pocket Garden was released on April 17th, and covered by Bleeding Cool, among others.[16][17]

Collaborations[edit]

In 2022 and 2023, dot big bang was the headline sponsor of the Global Game Jam.[18]

Dot big bang also partnered with educational organisation Girls Make Games[19] to create a workshop teaching young girls and nonbinary children how to design video game levels. This partnership comes as part of a broader initiative[20] to utilise dot big bang as a tool for classroom education.

Dot big bang has run several collaborations with noted gaming content creators, including day9 and Preston Arsement.[8]
