Double Daylight Saving Time

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Double Daylight Saving Time or Double Summer Time is a practice of adjusting the clock two hours ahead of standard instead of an hour; however, the adjustment created a 2 hour gap between standard time and double daylight time.[1]

History[edit]

The practice was used in United Kingdom during Second World War (WW II) Great Britain adopted British Double Summer Time advancing clocks two hours ahead of the normal Standard Time;[2]and, experimentally in Newfoundlandfor one year in 1988.[3]

Results[edit]

Double Daylight Savings Time created many changes that were undesirable to business and society; for example, children were going to school while it was still dark. In some areas, sunrise did not come until as late as 11 a.m. Agricultural sectors did; however, somewhat benefit from the change that resulted in additional sunlight. The additional light after work or school was enjoyed by many in the United States in 1974 and 1975. In the business sectors, workers did not like getting up at the equivalent to 3:00 or 4:00 am to go to work, despite the brief respite from darkness in the evening hours.

Impacts[edit]

United States Government Agencies 'claimed' there were detrimental effects and notable (later debunked) effects on fuel, energy consumption and a rise in automobile deaths, among many other since-debunked claims. The fact is that American society became acclimated to the change and enjoyed the after school / work daylight remaining. This editor was in-fact alive, and of age and cognizance when the United States experimented in 1974 and 1975, and came away with no lasting effects whatsoever.
