J Douglas Boles is an American sports executive and attorney, best known for his role as the President of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation. He assumed this position in June 2013 and has been responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) and its renowned racing events.[1]. Boles has also played a pivotal role in exploring business opportunities and leading significant renovations at the facility.
Early life and education[edit]
Boles attended Butler University from 1984 to 1988, where he was a member of the varsity swim team and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. In 1999, he earned his J.D. from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law[2].
Career[edit]
After completing his education, Boles established a successful career in motorsports, specializing in team operations, marketing, sponsorship, and public relations. In November 2010, he joined the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation as the Director of Public Relations. Recognizing his leadership skills and experience, Boles was appointed Vice President of Communications for Hulman & Company, the parent company of IMS[3], in November 2011. He briefly served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from January to June 2013 before assuming the role of President.
As President of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation, Boles oversees the daily operations of the Speedway and manages its prestigious racing events, including the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil, the Indycar Grand Prix, the Brickyard 400, and the Red Bull Air Race. He also actively explores and expands business opportunities for Speedway.
During his tenure, Boles has been involved in significant initiatives. One notable achievement was overseeing Project 100, a highly publicized renovation project that invested over $100 million in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway[4]. The project aimed to modernize and enhance the facility, which celebrated its 108th anniversary in 2016. Boles also played a crucial role in organizing the historic 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, a landmark event in the race's history.
Under Boles' leadership, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway expanded its horizons beyond traditional motorsport events. In 2015, the Speedway hosted the first-ever standalone music event when it welcomed the Rolling Stones for a memorable performance on July 4[5]. Furthermore, the IMS secured a multi-year agreement to host an LPGA golf tournament starting in 2017 at the Pete Dye-designed golf course located on the Speedway's premises[6]
Prior to his association with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Boles held executive positions in various organizations. From 2006 to 2008, he served as the Executive Vice President of the marketing and advertising agency Ignition, Inc. Later, he became a partner in the marketing agency i3Worldwide while maintaining his private law practice, primarily representing drivers, race teams, and sponsors. Boles was also a founding partner of Panther Racing, one of the most successful teams in the IndyCar Series. He served as a co-owner and team Chief Operating Officer from 1997 until early 2006.
Boles has also made significant contributions to his community. From 1992 to 1997, he served as the Director of Governmental and Corporate Affairs for Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith, where he pioneered the nation's first government-led effort to attract motorsports companies and jobs to the community.
Personal life[edit]
Boles and his wife, Beth, reside in Zionsville and have four children.
