Douglas Swan (1930–2000) was a painter in post-Second World War Britain, moving to Italy, Switzerland and finally Germany in the later part of his career. Born in 1930 in New Britain, Connecticut, USA, as the son of Scottish emigrants, his family moved back to Scotland in 1936. Swan first studied at the College of Art in Dundee, Scotland; he also attended the Trinity College of Music in London. During his studies, Douglas Swan worked as a draftsman for the British Railway Company. He received scholarships from the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. In 1954 he was awarded the RSA scholarship in London where he met and formed a lasting friendship with the artist William Scott. The collaboration in William Scott's studio became important for his further painterly development[1]. They painted together in Somerset and Cornwall and Swan exhibited at Gimpel Fils in London in 1957. Swan, together with other St Ives artists Patrick Heron, Peter Lanyon, Anthony Benjamin and Trevor Bell, was awarded a British Council Scholarship to study in Italy in 1958. While on scholarship in Milan, Swan enjoyed the vibrant contemporary art scene of the time, exhibiting at Galleria Il Milione consecutively in the early years of the Sixties [2].
During the late 1960s Swan moved to Switzerland with his wife Barbara (nee Kückels). In the mid 1970s, they moved to Bonn, living at first in Mozartstrasse, and then in Göbenstrasse. Throughout his life, Swan would often return to his parental home of Carnoustie where he continued to paint and draw inspiration. In 1986 he was awarded the annual Art Prize of the City of Bonn (Kunststipendium des Stadt), a major prize that is still given, and in 1997 the August Macke Medal.
On the 7th of June 2000, the artist died in Bonn. Robin Alexander Swan established the "Douglas Swan Foundation" in 2005 under the umbrella of the Bonn Civic Foundation[3]. A retrospective of the artist's work was recently held at the Museum August Macke Haus in Bonn in 2021 [4]
