INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS WITH SOCIAL RELEVANCE LAUNCHED
Large Scale Teak Plantation on NMU Campus, Jalgaon: Undertook an ambitious/unique program of teak plantation for upgrading academic ambiance at North Maharashtra University (NMU) and rendering it financially self-reliant in the future. About 92,000 teak and eucalyptus plants were planted over one hundred acres of the university premises in July 1999 with the help of students, staff, and faculty, using elite plantlets, soil conditioner, a consortium of four bio-fertilizers, plant growth regulator, and drip-irrigation system. During August 2001, when I relinquished the office of the Vice-Chancellor, its rate of survival was 92% & growth 20–25 feet, metamorphosing the environment into pleasant greenery to promote learning, research, creativity, and revival of wildlife. Besides rendering picturesque and eco-friendly, this venture is expected to generate revenue of about Rs. 70 crores in 25 years. No other university in India has ever embarked on such a venture on education, environment, and self-reliance in the future.
The State Government and Central Government have appreciated the success of this project by "Vanshree award" in 2003 and "Indira Priyadarshani award" in 2005.
Non-Conventional Energy Sources:
To save energy, render eco-friendly, and be cost-effective, solar hot water units were installed on Ladies' & Gents' Hostels, University Guest House, and Vice-Chancellor's Residence at NMU, Jalgaon.
Establishment of Sane Guruji Sanskar Kendra: For moulding students' character, creating consciousness, and transforming them as responsible citizens through learning of moral values, this kendra was established in the memory of this great social reformer and litterateur for primary & secondary school, college, and university students in Jalgaon, Dhule, and Nandurbar Districts under NMU jurisdiction.
