Dr. Atlasz József

Atlasz József (December 24, 1884 - June 09, 1982) was a Hungarian doctor who practiced his profession mainly on ships. He spoke English, French, German, Italian, and Hungarian. He had two children.

Early Life[edit]

He was born in Encs in 1884 and finished elementary school there. He went to highschool to Kassa. As he claims, he wanted to study foreign trade but it was unknown which branch office he would be delegated to, therefore, he gave up his dream. He acquired his Doctor of Medicine diploma in 1909. 10. 30. at the University of Budapest.[1]

Work life[edit]

After he finished the university he worked in the City Hospital of Fiume from 1909-1911. He was found there by Cunard Line and he was offered a job as a ship's doctor. At first, he worked on cargo ships, then on RMS Carpathia which was a transatlantic passenger steamship. He did not practice on the ship when it rescued the passengers of the Titanic, his friend a colleague Lengyel Árpád lead the rescue. In 1916 he left behind the ocean and sailing and became the general practitioner of Kőtelek. In the same year, he became the village doctor of Sárrétudvari, where he spent the rest of his life. He was only ill in his life once, in 1918 he had Spanish flu and almost died.[2]

Late life[edit]

He retired in 1938; although, he still worked in private practice for twenty years. His eyesight deteriorated in 1974 and shortly after he became fully blind. He was the only doctor in Hungary until 1979 who received the Granite Diploma. He died on June 09. 1982.
