Early Life[edit]

Dr. David Elton Graves (born Sept 3, 1956) is an internationally renowned biblical archaeologist, educator, and author, known for his extensive research and contributions to the field of biblical studies. Born and raised in New Brunswick. Canada, Dr. Graves he has dedicated over 35 years to imparting knowledge on the Bible and archaeology. He developed a passion for history and archaeology at a young age. He spent many hours exploring the ISBE, which sparked his interest in the ancient world and the stories of the Bible. This interest in Archaeology was reignited in 1978 when he took a course in Biblical Archaeology at Tyndale University (previously Ontario Bible College) where among several papers wrote a paper on the location of Sodom And Gomorrah and met Dr. Bryant Wood at Toronto Bible Seminary during his research.

Education[edit]

Dr. Graves holds an impressive list of academic credentials, having earned a Ph.D. (2008) from the esteemed University of Aberdeen, in Scotland, in Theology (interdisciplinary with Old and New Testament Biblical history and archaeology). His dissertation titled "The Influence of Ancient Near Eastern Vassal Treaties on the Seven Prophetic Messages in Revelation." His dissertation was supervised by the late I. Howard Marshall, Professor Emeritus of New Testament Exegesis and Honorary Research Professor at the University of Aberdeen. Dr. Marshall also invited two other experts – Edwin M. Yamauchi to oversee the Graeco-Roman archaeology and history, and Alan Millard to oversee the Ancient Near Eastern (ANE) Hittite law codes – to review his dissertation.

The expertise and experience of Dr. Graves is highly sought-after, and with his distinguished background, he is an invaluable asset to the field of archaeology.

I. Howard Marshall, commented on Dr. Graves' dissertation, "The Seven Messages of Revelation and Vassal Treaties: Literary Genre, Structure, and Function." published by Gorgias Press: “Dr. Graves seeks to shed light on the problem of the structure of thought in Revelation by placing the work as a whole and the messages to the seven churches in particular firmly in the context of the ancient near eastern vassal treaties that have also influenced the shape of covenantal theology in the Old Testament. This carefully researched thesis brings a new contribution to the interpretation of the apocalypse and deserves close examination.” — I. Howard Marshall, Emeritus Professor of New Testament Exegesis, University of Aberdeen.

Career[edit]

After completing his undergraduate studies in theology, archaeology and anthropology at Indiana University, Dr. Graves pursued a graduate degree in biblical studies at Yale University. It was during this time that he began to focus his research on the intersection of biblical texts and archaeological evidence. His dissertation, which examined the cultural context of the book of Exodus, received high praise and set the foundation for his future work in the field.

Upon completing his doctorate, Dr. Graves joined the faculty at Crandall University as the director of Computer Services and a professor of biblical studies and archaeology. He quickly became known for his innovative teaching methods, incorporating hands-on experiences in archaeological excavations at Qumran, Temple Mount salvage excavation, Tel Shiloh all in Israel and for over ten seasons field supervisor at Tall el-Hammam in Jordan and field trips to ancient sites into his classes.

In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Graves has led numerous archaeological excavations in Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. His discoveries have shed new light on biblical narratives and have been published in various academic journals and books. He is also a sought-after speaker and has given lectures at universities, conferences, and churches around the world.

Personal Life[edit]

In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Graves is also deeply involved in community outreach and education. He has worked with local schools and organizations to promote the importance of preserving and studying ancient sites and artifacts. He also volunteers his time to share his knowledge and passion for biblical archaeology with children and adults alike.

Dr. Graves' dedication and contributions to the field of biblical archaeology have earned him numerous awards and accolades. He is a member of several prestigious archaeological societies and has been featured in various media outlets for his expertise and research.

Today, Dr. David Elton Graves continues to inspire and educate others through his work in biblical archaeology. He is a respected scholar and leader in the field, and his passion for understanding the ancient world and its connection to the Bible remains as strong as ever.
