Dr. S. Jeyapragasam

Dr. S. Jeyapragasam (1949-2018) was a prominent Gandhian scholar and teacher in Tamil Nadu, India. He was known for his work as an peace educator in Madurai.

He helped found the Centre for Socio-Cultural-Cultural Interaction (CESCI) along with Maia Koene and Rajagopal P. V. He was also the founder of the International Gandhian Institute for Nonviolence and Peace (IGINP), an organization dedicated to nonviolent grassroots education. After a long teaching career at Madurai Kamaraj University, he led many grassroots classes in holistic nonviolence at CESCI, founded and administered a program in distance education in the same area and published the journal, Ahimsa Nonviolence in English and Tamil (2009-2016), soliciting articles from scholars and peace activists around the world. In this way, he became a support and mentor to many younger scholars and peace activists both in Tamil Nadu and also in North America and Europe.[1] He published a wide range of translations of important peace documents into Tamil, including the work of Peace Pilgrim.[2] His influence as a Gandhian educator and teacher spread across many continents and cultures.[3]

In his youth, he served on a committee instituted by Jayprakash Narayan for mobilising the youth during the Emergency[4]. Later he pursued an academic path, eventually becoming a Lecuturer, Reader and finally a Professor of Gandhian Studies and Ramalinga Philosophy and Chair, School of Religion, Philosophy and Humanist Thought at Madurai Kamaraj University[5] While teaching at Madurai Kamaraj University, he designed several programs: an M.Sc., in Peacemaking, and M.A. in Gandhian Thought and a program for distance education called “Key Concepts of Gandhian Philosophy”.[6] After his retirement in 2008, he became a full-time volunteer doing popular education in rural areas of south India, coordinating the activities of the International Gandhian Institute for Nonviolence and Peace (IGINP), and acting as editor of the Journal Ahimsa Nonviolence published in English and Tamil. He founded the Betsy Institute of Women's Studies, in memory of Elizabeth Betsy, a pioneering social worker and scholar[7] undertook the translation into Tamil of many classic texts of nonviolence and organized with other scholars a diploma course in nonviolence and peace.[8][4] He was the coauthor of book on N Krishnaswamy,[9] on Aspects of the Caste System in South India[10], as well as numerous articles on nonviolence with such scholars as Lester Kurtz.
