Surendra Meher is an eminent master weaver of Western Odisha. He is famous for his traditional Sambalpuri Ikat saree design and Tie-Dye Bandha Saree of Odisha. After graduating from Sambalpur University, he devoted himself to innovating and experimenting with new designs in the age-old traditional art of Sambalpuri Ikat to adapt it to modern tastes. He worked for the simplification of the traditional Ikat craft and trained 1000 weavers of his locality. He has developed a number of designs in Tie & Dye Sarees, Dupatta, and Wall Hangings based on Indian tradition.[1][2]
He has received many awards for his lifetime contribution to the Handlooms sector. He received the prestigious Sant Kabir Award[3][2] in 2013 from the Government of India, the National Award[4] in 1991 from the Government of Odisha, and the State Award[5] in 1989 from the Government of Odisha. Recently, he was honored with a D.Litt. title from Gangadhar Meher University, Sambalpur[6] For his distinguished contribution to the handicraft sector, the Odisha Government recommended his name for the Prestigious Padmashri Award 2014, the fourth highest civilian award of India.[7]
