Early Life[edit]

Career[edit]

As Samsung Biologics CEO since 2011, Dr. Tae Han Kim has led the company to become one of the largest manufacturers in the biopharmaceutical space. Samsung Biologics has the largest facility of its kind in the world and is known for providing development, testing, and manufacturing services for major industry clients.

Dr. Kim is largely responsible for the vision behind the company. After evaluating several opportunities that would allow Samsung Group to expand, Dr. Kim and other group leaders selected the biomedical field. Dr. Kim had a personal interest in health care and life sciences and identified a sizable opportunity for Samsung to expand.

Specifically, Dr. Kim set a goal of having a Samsung Biologics facility with a capacity of 120,000 liters by 2020. He and his team exceeded this goal when they completed a 362,000-liter facility in 2018. To this day, it is the largest facility of its kind in the world.

Prior to launching Samsung Biologics, Dr. Kim held prominent positions at several other Samsung Group companies. He’s been an executive vice president of strategic business development at Samsung Group, a principal at Samsung General Chemicals, and a senior leader at Samsung Total Petrochemicals (a joint venture of Samsung and Total).

A few of Dr. Kim’s more notable achievements in these various positions included leading Samsung General Chemicals through major restructuring and helping found Samsung Total Petrochemicals. He has also overseen the building of multiple manufacturing facilities, including plants for styrene monomer production, polypropylene production, aromatics production, and naphtha cracking.

The culmination of Dr. Kim’s educational background came in 1988 when he earned a doctoral degree in chemical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.
