Dr. Vivek Bindal is the leading Robotic and Bariatric surgeon of India. He started Clinical Robotic Surgery Association (India), the first robotic surgery society of the country with more than 200 leading surgeons as its members. He is the Vice-Chairman of Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (iMAS), Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, (one of the leading centers for teaching and clinical care in the country). He is a pioneer surgeon in the field of robotics, and was among the first ones to start a robotic bariatric program in South-East Asia in 2012.

He was the first one in the country to remove pheochromocytoma (adrenal tumor) using robotic surgery in a child . He performed the first bariatric surgery of Himachal Pradesh at Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, which was transmitted live and witnessed by dignitaries including the Chief Minister of the state . He was part of the team that operated on Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in 2013. He has published extensively in international journals and is a member of the editorial board of various journals including Surgery for Obesity & Related Diseases (SOARD), USA. He has been invited to speak at more than 50 international and 100 national conferences.

Career

He is a Robotic, Bariatric and Hernia Surgeon. He has a keen interest in Robotic Bariatric (Weight loss) Surgery and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction. He has worked and published extensively in this field. He is among the pioneer surgeons in South East Asia to bring Robotic Surgery into the field of obesity surgery. Dr. Vivek Bindal completed his MBBS and MS (General Surgery) from the prestigious Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. Thereafter, he did a 2-year Fellowship of National Board (FNB) in Minimal Access Surgery from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Following this degree, Dr. Bindal did a fellowship in Robotic Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery from University of Illinois at Chicago, United States. He also worked as a faculty member in the Division of Metabolic & Weight Loss Surgery, Duke University Medical Center, USA. He has one of the largest experiences in Robotic and Bariatric Surgery in South East Asia. He has published many research papers and book chapters in this field in reputed journals. He has been invited to speak on Laparoscopic, Robotic and Bariatric Surgery at various international and national conferences. He is actively involved in research in Bariatric surgery and is co-PI of many projects involving basic science research. He has a keen interest in teaching and is the academic coordinator for a 2-year Fellowship course in Minimal Access Surgery from the National Board of Examinations.

4. Received the Times of India Healthcare achiever award at Taj Palace for “Excellence in Minimal Access and Bariatric Surgery” on November 25, 2018.
