DramaBox is a mobile short-drama (duanju) streaming application developed by Beijing-based Dianzhong Technology and operated by its Singaporean subsidiary, StoryMatrix. It was launched internationally in 2023.
History
DramaBox was created by Dianzhong Technology as part of its overseas strategy for short-form video content. The app was launched in 2023 and initially targeted Southeast Asian markets, before expanding to other regions including East Asia, Europe, and North America.
Platform and Features
Episodes on DramaBox typically last between one and three minutes and are produced in vertical format for mobile viewing. The app offers serialized narratives across genres such as romance, thriller, and fantasy. It operates on a freemium model in which some episodes are free, while later installments require small payments or subscriptions. The platform also supports multiple languages, making it accessible to international audiences.[1][not in citation given]
Market Reach
By mid-2024, DramaBox had recorded tens of millions of downloads and significant growth in user activity. According to industry reports, the app has been among the leading contributors to the global short-drama sector, which reached nearly USD 700 million in in-app revenue in the first quarter of 2025.[2] Business media noted that the app’s international expansion reflects the growing global appetite for mobile-first storytelling formats.[3]
Industry Context
Short-form dramas, also known as duanju, are a rapidly growing entertainment format that originated in China. They are characterized by fast production cycles and low budgets, with episodes designed for vertical smartphone viewing. The genre has expanded rapidly overseas, with analysts projecting the global market could reach USD 14 billion by 2027.[4] Reports from international media highlight DramaBox as one of the apps popularizing this format abroad.[5]
Awards
In 2024, DramaBox received the Sensor Tower Award for Best Short Drama App. It was also recognized by Google Play in its annual “Best of” list of entertainment apps.[6]
