Dredging Association of Maldives

The Dredging Association of Maldives (DAM) is a non-profit, non-governmental professional association for the dredging sector that was incorporated in 2020.[1] It seeks to create and distribute unbiased knowledge and information on dredging in the Maldives by providing an independent platform for those interested in activities related to dredging and maritime building in the Maldives.[2]

Advocacy

DAM stated in August 2021 that transferring sand between islands by dredging more sand than allowed for projects has become a prevalent activity in the Maldives' dredging sector, and that authorities should take action against such offenses.[3][4] DAM is concerned that dredging is being carried out for short-term economic and political advantage rather than for long-term strategic development.[5][6]

DAM expressed grave concerns in February 2022, stating that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the land reclamation project in Sh. Mathikomandoo[7] does not comply with the EIA Regulation or the EPA's standard procedure for such processes.[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]
