Drew Garby
Drew Garby is a nomination contestant for the Ottawa federal riding of Carleton under the Liberal Party of Canada banner.
Background
Drew Garby was born in Ottawa, Ontario. According to his website, he grew up in a low-income family.[1] While in high school, Garby worked for the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization, where he tutored new immigrants in the English language and assisted with their transition into Canadian life. Garby also played competitive football as a quarterback for his high school's football team, as well as for the Cumberland Panthers.[2][3]
In 2015, Garby graduated and enrolled at Carleton University to pursue a degree in Political Science and Economics, with a specialization in international relations. He is expected to complete his studies in the summer of 2021.
Throughout his university career, Garby worked in construction and managed various construction sites and building projects. At the same time, Garby also pursued entrepreneurial endeavors and started his own small business.[4]
Garby previously worked in the Canadian public service, but stepped away from his duties to pursue political endeavors.
Politics
Drew Garby became involved in politics after working in the Senate of Canada as a research assistant.
Garby was a registered delegate to the 2021 National Liberal Convention, where he publicly supported "progressive green policies".
In May 2021, Garby announced his intention to seek the Liberal Party of Canada's nomination for the federal riding of Carleton.[5] Since announcing, Garby has gained notoriety on Twitter and has been heralded by users as a potential candidate to dethrone Pierre Poilievre, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Carleton since 2004.
In an interview with The Charlatan, Carleton University's independent newspaper, Garby stated that he supports "the implementation of a 9-8-8 mental health hotline, an LRT line, providing green public transit to residents in Stittsville, Ontario, and reducing taxes on overtime pay."[6]
