Drew Hirshfeld is an American patent official who performed the functions and duties of the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office from January 2021 to April 2022.[1][2][3][4][5]
Education
Hirshfeld earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Vermont and a Juris Doctor from Western New England University School of Law.[1]
USPTO career
Hirshfeld began his USPTO career as a patent examiner in 1994 and entered the Senior Executive Service in 2008. He later served as chief of staff to the director, deputy commissioner for patent examination policy, and commissioner for patents from 2015 to 2021.[1]
As the official performing the functions and duties of the USPTO director, Hirshfeld led the agency through implementation of director review after United States v. Arthrex, Inc. and through work connected with the Trademark Modernization Act of 2020.[1]
