Drexel University's School of Education is one of the schools and colleges of Drexel University, a non-profit, U.S. News and World Report top 100 research university founded in 1891 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1] The school offers a wide-range of bachelor's master's, and doctorate degree programs, as well as several add-on certification and professional certificates related to the field of education.[2] The majority of programs in the School of Education are taught online, although there are on-campus options for the school's undergraduate teacher certification programs, master's in Applied Behavior Analysis, and PhD programs. The school's EdD in Educational Leadership and Management program is offered online or in a hybrid format with students taking courses online and meeting 3 times per term at Drexel's University City campus.[3]

History[edit]

Teacher education programs dates back to Drexel's founding in 1891 when teacher training programs were offered to women. Today, the School of Education provides educational programs to men and women across a wide array of educational subjects. The School of Education was established in 1997. Prior to the School's official founding, teacher education programs were carried out by various schools and colleges within Drexel University.[6] The School of Education was part of Drexel's Goodwin College of Professional Studies. In 2012, The School of Education separated from Goodwin College and became it's own independent unit.[7]

Drexel University's School of Education holds a commencement Ceremony each spring to confer degrees to undergraduate and graduate students.

The School of Education offers 4 bachelor's degree programs, 12 master's degree programs, and 2 doctoral programs in various subjects in the field of Education. In addition, the school offers 23 post-bachelors certificate and certification programs.[2]

In addition to teacher certification and degree programs, the School of Education also leads the Philadelphia Teacher Residency Program that is designed for those interested in teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics subjects in grades 6-12 in Philadelphia. Students complete teacher certification courses at Drexel, while learning alongside mentor teachers in a Philadelphia school.[8]

The School of Education is located on the grounds of Drexel University's "University City Campus" just west of the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On-campus School of Education students take courses in various academic buildings. The School's administrative offices are located on the third floor of the UCity Square building at 3401 Market Street.

The School also is home to the Critical Conversations in Urban Education Lecture Series that sponsors periodic events on education issues.[9] Events are open to the public. The school also sponsors three student organizations:[10]

Awards and accreditation[edit]

The School of Education is fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The School's Applied Behavior Analysis program is approve by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board.[11] Likewise, the School's Special Education program has received accreditation by the International Dyslexia Association.

The School of Education has received millions of dollars in grants to fund education research projects and programs. Most notably, the School received $30 million from the U.S. Department of Education to lead education and outreach programs in the federally-designated West Philadelphia Promise Zone.[12] The School is also funded by the Philadelphia School Partnership to provide teacher training programs for Drexel students interested in teaching in Middle School grades.[13] The program prepares 40 students to become teachers every year through 2022 to meet the high need for STEM teachers in middles grades.[14]

The School of Education is affiliated with the American Educational Research Association (AERA). Doctoral students from the School participate in AERA's Doctoral Student Cohort Program.[15]

The School of Education is named among the best online Master's in Curriculum and Instruction degree programs in the United States by The Best Schools.[16]
