In Brunei Darussalam, driving licence is required before any person are allowed to drive a motor vehicle.[1] In order to obtain the driving licence, the person must pass the theory and practical test in Brunei. Once passed the test, the person will be issued Provisional Driving Licence which is valid for one year. After one year, the person will get the full driving licence.[2][3]


Classes of driving licence[edit]

The classification of motor vehicles and eligibility of a driving licence in Brunei is as follows:[4]

3 Private and Commercial vehicles net weight below 3000kg 18

5 Commercial vehicles net weight between 4500 kilogrammes and over 21
6 Bus with more than 16 passenger 21
6A Bus with not more than 16 passenger 21
7 Invalid Carriage 18
8 Road Roller 21
9 Steam Driven Vehicle 21
10 Track Laying Vehicle 21

International driving permit[edit]

Brunei is a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic where the International Driving Permit (IDP) is honored. Holders of the Bruneian driving license does not need to acquire International driving permit to drive in any ASEAN countries in accordance with The Kuala Lumpur Agreement of 1985.[5][6]
