Dropzopie
Dropzopie is a Dutch strong liquor, made of brandy, juniper berries and star anise. According to oral tradition, it was invented around 1780 in Schiedam. At the time, Schiedam was the location of hundreds of genever distilleries.
The alcoholic drink is traditionally created by distilling malt wine and adding juniper berries, and adding liquorice root and star anise. It was known as a liquor that fishermen used at sea. The combination of herbs and spices, so the Dutch believed, would keep people healthy in the often harsh conditions at sea.[1][2]
In the 1980s, the drink made a resurgence within the Netherlands when Amsterdam based distillery Bols reissued the original recipe as 'Bols Black'.[3]
In 2015 the drink made waves in the mixology community when a Dutch bartender used it during the Diageo World Class mixing competition[4]. Since then cocktails based on the liquor have appeared in high-end bars around the world.
